World Cup 2019:Team India Squad

The selection of Team India for the world cup ended with a 15 men squad to England which did not feature rising star Rishabh Pant and Ambati Rayudu in it. The second Keeper’s slot was given to Dinesh karthik. The selection of karthik over Pant has surprised many who were eager to see the explosive left hander in the squad for the world cup.

Reasons for selection of karthik over Pant:-

  1. Selectors must have felt that Karthik  possess better Finishing abilities than Pant. Karthik looked good during the home series against Australia where he took the initiative along with Ms Dhoni to finish a few games. Pant has got explosive starts but has failed to capitalize on the momentum he gets during his innings and throws his wicket at the wrong time.
  2. Another reason could be Pant’s sloppy glove-work behind the stumps recently in the ODI series against Australia especially the 4th ODI where he missed stumping of Ashton turner and then it cost India with the match where turner fired 43 ball 84* and took his side over the line.
Shankar to play at no.4 spot for India :-
It’s been a long time now but still  India are facing worries after the 2015 world cup with the number 4 slot. Lot of experiments have been done in order to get the right no.4 for India by trying out few Batsmen like Shreyas Iyer, Manish Pandey, Ambati Rayudu, Kedar Jadhav, Rishabh Pant, MS Dhoni ,Vijay Shankar and even the Skipper Virat kohli, but the only stand out performers at this spot were Ambati Rayudu and Vijay Shankar. Both have looked good in this spot but finally Indian selectors have given the responsibility to Vijay Shankar to take the spot in the World Cup.
Reasons for selection of Shankar  over Rayudu :-
  1. Though Rayudu has been better no.4 for India his poor form against Australia ended up giving Shankar a place for in the Squad. Shankar has also looked good in both the series against New Zealand and Australia at home with few catchy knocks of 45 against New Zealand when Indian batting collapsed to 18/4 and then a furious knock of 46 against Australia which ended with a run out at the non-striker’s end.
  2. Shankar also has the ability to bowl 3-4 overs and give 1or 2 wickets in the middle overs and with the Old ball. Well his bowling would suit in English conditions as he might get the old ball to reverse swing a bit. Also fielding is a plus point in his selection if compared to Rayudu which is a very important aspect in the game.
